two people injured, including a firefighter. >> nicole: learning more about the man shot and killed by lynn police, his long criminal past including this viral video. >> sarah: and meeting again. what president-elect donald trump and former governor mitt romney discussed over dinner. >> this is 7news "today in new england." >> sarah: good wednesday morning, everybody. thanks for waking up with us. i'm sarah french. >> nicole: and i'm nicole oliverio in for christa. dare i say it was warm when i walked out of the it wasn't as cold as usual, even though it was so rainy and gross. >> nicole: are we going to see more of, that wren? >> wren: our highs were late last night. we reached 58 degrees, but that was closer to around 8:00, 9:00 last night. since then temperatures have fallen for us. we won't be that warm today, but we are looking at seasonable temperatures back into the upper 40s. our main concern is visibility. we have a dense fog advisory to our north, southern new hampshire and vermont as well as to our west, west of worcester

everybody is seeing some of this fog. so areas of fog throughout southern new england. visibility down half a mile in norwood, boston going to have some reduced visibility, as well. but in term of those rain showers, those are holding off for us now. we are dry and we'll be predominantly dry throughout much of the morning. rain is returning. be sure to grab your umbrella before you head out the door. >> sarah: time now for fast track traffic with danielle gersh. >> danielle: thanks, sarah. here's a look at the zakim bridge and leverett connector. no issues so far for your morning on the out the door, you're in good shape. the expressway braintree to boston northbound, only going to take you about ten minutes this morning. not seeing any problems out there. again, lots of green on the maps. let's take a look at those drive times if you're getting ready to head out the door. ten minutes braintree to boston northbound on the expressway. 12 minutes into town on the pike from 128 and 93 southbound, 128 to the zakim bridge just 11 minutes this morning. the "t" and commuter rail starting the morning on schedule. back to you, guys.

at least three people have been killed in severe storms down south. a tornado tore through northern alabama. the twister slammed enter a 24-hour day care center, critically injuring four people. there also a church was destroyed. rescue crews right now are sifting through damage and debris. >> sarah: happening today, an emergency meeting is being held to discuss firing the dighton fire chief, who is charged with abusing his clothing allowance. investigators say he used taxpayer money to buy women's clothing. >> nicole: he claims the clothes are for investigators don't believe him. 7's jennifer eagan is live in dighton with more on this meeting to discuss his future. >> jennifer: and, nicole, town officials say that he reportedly tried to... he tried on some of the clothing to try to convince them they were, in fact, for him. they don't believe him. they're going to hold a meeting later today to address this issue. dighton fire chief anton roderick accused of abusing a perk that comes with the job.

his clothing allowance to purchase women's workout gear and lied about it to police. the chief allegedly altered some receipts to say menswear. roderick told investigators he prefers a slim fit, which is why he shopped for women's item, but after a month-long investigation, roderick was charged with violating employee standards of contact and lars nism police believe he bought that clothing worth $250 for someone else. their board of selectmen is calling an emergency meeting to discuss suspending or firing the chief, saying there is more to the story. >> after tomorrow, those figures are going the change. there has been a substantial amount more that has shown up, and i mean substantial. >> hundreds, thousands? >> thousands. >> jennifer: and that town selectman says moving forward they will be aggressively auditing the fire department's finances looking for other

jennifer eagan, 7news "today in new england." >> nicole: right now police are searching for the driver involved in a serious hit-and-run in taunton. this happened on state street late last night. police say a driver hit man with a pick-up truck and dragged him for two blocks before driving off. the victim, we're told, is in serious condition and suffered a severe leg injury. >> sarah: this morning investigators are searching for what sparked the fierce flames that displaced 30 people in one woman was trapped on the third floor when the fire started yesterday afternoon. she was rescued from the mull -- multifamily home on east haverhill street. >> that was my worry, that somebody was still stuck in the apartments. >> so fast, so fast. as soon as we got out, the third floor blew up on that side. very lucky to be alive. >> sarah: one firefighter and another woman were both taken to

ism new details in the deadly police-involved shooting in lynn. this morning we're learning the man police shot has a lengthy criminal past, including this incident in malden where an elderly woman socked him while he tried to rob a 7-eleven. victoria warren is back at the scene with all the details. >> victoria: sources telling us this man just got out of prison. they say yesterday morning he walked into this gas station demanding money, saying he had a gun. source s suspect has done time and time again. they say that he went in and when he demanded the money, the clerk then called 911. >> shots fired. shots fired. >> victoria: police opening fire in lynn, shooting and killing man suspected in a violent robbery at a gas station. >> the individual had his hand in his pockets. the officers ordered him to show his hands. he refused to do so. he continued to come at the officers. they proved back to try to

fired his weapon. >> victoria: 41-year-old michael mcguinness died in the hospital. sources telling 7news mcguinness just got out of prison and has a long history of robbery. in 2010 this surveillance video went viral, showing a 75-year-old woman trying to jump in to help a clerk as police say mcguinness jumped behind the counter, strong-arming him to hand him the money. police say he was at it again o at this gas station and taking $250. >> an individual went in there armed with a firearm. >> victoria: the clerk was okay. now the district attorney's office is investigating all the events leading to the police officer opening fire. and the two police officers involved yesterday were not hurt. lynn's police chief not saying if they recovered a weapon. he says that is part of the continuing investigation. live this morning in lynn, victoria warren, 7news "today in

>> nicole: president-elect trump's transition continuing over dinner in new york last night. mitt romney getting what appeared to be a second-round interview for the secretary of state job. at the same time, the president-elect is sparking controversy over his twitter talk on flag burning. kris anderson joins us now with with the latest on this. kris? >> kris: sarah, a lot to talk about in the political world. a former massachusetts governor speaking out about his dinner date with the president-elect. president-elect donald arriving for dinner in new york. it's the second time that governor romney has met with president-elect trump as he considers romney for secretary of state. >> i've had a wonderful evening with president-elect trump. we have another discussion about affairs throughout the world. >> kris: the former massachusetts governor seemed hopeful by a possible spot in the cabinet. >> i have the tell you, i've been impressed by the transition effort, the people he's selected

solid, effective, capable people. >> kris: it ended a busy day. tuesday steven manu chin was tapped as treasury secretary, elaine chao selected as transportation secretary. chao was labor secretary under george w. bush. despite naming several people to his cabinet, the president-elect's tweets getting lots of attention. tuesday morning he tweeted, "nobody should be allowed to burn the american flag. if they do, there must be consequence,er a harsh punishment for an act the supreme court ruled was legal and protected by the first amendment. many republicans disagreeing with the comments. >> i think there should be some punishent, but right now the supreme court decision is that people are free to express themselves. >> kris: the president-elect will meet with carrier to

to keep more than 1,000 jobs in the state instead of going to mexico. >> sarah: the president-elect's chief strategist is backing out of a conference at harvard's kennedy school after protests were planned. it's not clear why bannon canceled. >> nicole: this morning big news coverage of major stories we've been following for days. tragic news out of tennessee. three people have died in the wildfires that tore through the smoky mountains. firefighters say the victims died in the blaze burned roughly 15,000 acres and destroyed more than 250 buildings near the ski resort town of gatlinburg and pigeon forge. >> sarah: today investigateers will continue trying to figure out why a plane crashed in colombia. officials have already found the plane's black boxes. investigators are looking at the possibility the plane ran out of fuel. a brazilian soccer team was on board the plane. 71 people were killed in the crash. six others managed to survive.

believe the student responsible for the attack at ohio state was inspired by terrorist propaganda. police say posts on abdul artan's facebook page reference the former lead of al qaeda in yemen. artan injured ten people when he drove into a crowd of students and stabbed others on monday. >> sarah: the driver in a deadly school bus crash in tennessee facing a judge. 24-year-old johnthony walker is charged with vehicle homicide after police say he close lost into a pole and tree last week. six students were killed. five kids are still recovering in the hospital. >> nicole: still ahead, a story you'll see on just one station, a child in everett calls police on his own father. how an after-school pick-up landed a dad behind bars. >> sarah: then it's not beginning to look a lot like christmas in exeter. why the usually festive town square is staying dark. >> nicole: and a star-studded

>> sarah: bostonians can now get a taste of italy. the italian marketplace has now opened in the pru. local officials and new york chef mario batali were all at the grand opening yesterday. i don't know about you, i know it's only like 5:15 a.m., but all that pizza and cheese looks really good. >> nicole: i was thinking all this fresh pasta, fettucini alfredo between commercial breaks.

that out, wren. >> wren: looks fantastic. i don't think there's any time of the day where pizza and pasta doesn't look good. as we head through the derek our main concerns this morning, areas of dense fog. a dense fog advisory for southern new hampshire and southern vermont and west of worcester county, but we're all seeing some of this fog. you can see visibility reduced largely throughout southern new england. norwood down to under a mile. so this is going to affect morning commutes. allow a little extra time if you are headed further to our west, especially where that dense fog is. right now we're this -- i think we'll even see a couple peeks of morning sunshine. our next round of moisture will push into western massachusetts first and we'll eventually see this potentially by the mid to late morning. a better chance for moisture as we head into the afternoon. then it's going to get soggy as we head into the later afternoon and again commutes tonight more difficult. temperature-wise, minneapolis close to 40 degrees. out to our west, pretty quiet. you can see, though, it's been a different story to the southwest. they've been dealing with some

overnight hours, and actually even a tornado watch, which is letting up early this morning. but there have been sightings of tornadoes in central mississippi, definitely a strong system out that way. we'll see moisture associated with the system to our west, as well that. will push in from our southwest. and you can see these bans of moisture starting to set up by around lunchtime. we could see in they showers, stray showers still not really heavy rainfall. but this does intensify again as we continue into the later afternoon and again evening commute looking very soggy. so where you see tho see moderate to heavy rainfall. we'll have a repeat of what we saw yesterday evening for commutes home from work and we could be dealing with some fog again during all of this. late into tonight and tomorrow morning, we're still seeing that rain, which is going to be pretty heavy at time, but it pushes out of here very quickly. take a look, by 7:00, 8:00, we're drying out and we'll gradually see some sunshine into thursday. today patchy fog mainly after noon and evening rain. highs in the low 50s, upper 40s. showers continue into tonight

into tomorrow morning. we have a slight chance for early morning showers, but again, that's out of here by 8:00, 9:00, then we're seeing some thursday sunshine for the first day of september. temperatures close to 60 degrees. so we're well above our average highs. and you can see we this cool down as we head into next week. >> nicole: wren, thank you. it was a star-studded event here in boston all in the name of helping children. local legends coming together to support sick kids. >> sarah: patriots' celtics' stars, even jay leno, they were all here. kris anderson is here with how one star was missing. >> kris: a lot of faces there. rob gronkowski was the night's big honoree receiving the award, but the star tight end wasn't able to make this event because of an injury. this is the annual champions for children's gala, a way to support boston children's hospital and the community. jay leno, who grew up in andover, massachusetts, was a big hit with the kids, cracking jokes and asking them what they wanted for christmas.

this is my hometown. it's boston and it's kids. i don't know anybody who hasn't been affected byes be children's hospital. either someone in your family or somebody else's family or a kid down the street. >> kris: the annual fund-raiser has raised more than $42 million for patients and families at boston's children's. business leaders and boston athletes attended last night's event. >> i'm happy i'm able to put a smile on somebody's face. i can't play football forever, so while i can do it, i might as well go out and do can for the community. >> kris: nate solder is an offensive lineman for the new england patriots and has been touched personally byes be children's hospital. his one-year-old son was diagnosed with cancer late last year. >> they came to us in a time of great need. they've been there through the entire process, holding us up through a very difficult time in our lives and our son's struggles to have a place like boston children's is truly phenomenal. >> kris: the man behind the ice bucket challenge, pete

>> wren: well, we saw some pretty appreciable rainfall yesterday, about half an inch in boston. reports up to an inch and a half. a couple spots closer to two inches of rain. this morning we're dry, but we're dealing with some fog, some of which is dense. so a dense f effect until 9:00. this morning in vermont, southern new hampshire, as well as to our west, west of worcester county, we're seeing these areas of fog, again some of which are pretty dense. this advisory may be extended into northern worcester county. you can see bedford to half a mile of visibility. definitely a little bit of slow traffic headed that way this morning. >> and now time for 7sports with joe amorosino. >> joe: good morning. the bruins showed up in philly short-handed last night, still

>> nancy: nicole, good morning to you. you're absolutely right. the trouble started when this man went to pick up his son from school. police say he was drunk and then later on this same day, his older son called police to tell him that his father once again driving while intoxicated. hands to his mouth, steven byrnes handcuffed and bruised listens to his court charges read allowed, a reminder he's been arrested for drunk driving eight times before. >> the defendant has been convicted of influence of liquor approximately eight prior times. >> police say while he was picking up his son from school on monday, the 52-year-old everett man was noticeably intoxicated, raising the alert of the principal. >> the principal was concerned that an intoxicated parent was about to drive a child home. >> investigators say byrnes

the man's son says his father sometimes gets this way when he drinks. hours later he was out of jail. another son in his 20s called police saying he was drunk again while riding a motorcycle, leading to his ninth total o.u.i. >> he was driving around on a yellow motorcycle. they were able to place the defendant under arrest. they located three smirnoff vodka nips in the defendant's pocket. >> and the defense arguing his last o.u.i. w another court hearing was set for next week. live in everett, nancy chen, 7news "today in new england". >> sarah: new this morning, a protest outside the medford city council meeting. several officers voiced their frustrations about the conditions inside their station. they filed a discrimination complaint raising problems of mold, broken windows and dirty showers. officers say the poor conditions affect their ability to do

to do police work today because it's that antiquated. >> sarah: city officials say they are working on addressing the officers' concerns. >> nicole: massachusetts state leaders say procedural issues may postpone the legalization of recreational marijuana. so part one of the new law is set to take effect on december 15th. that will allow people to grow plants and have small amounts of marijuana on them. but secretary of state william galvin says the law won't take effect until it's certified by votes are counted, and there is no word yet on an exact date when that will be complete. and transit police have arrested this man, who they say attacked an elderly man at harvard square station. officials say the elderly man complained that the suspect was smoking on the platform and that's when he struck that elderly man in the face. that suspect now facing assault and battery charges. >> sarah: some local firefighters getting top honors.

tuesday. firefighters from 11 different departments from across the state were honored. members of the lynn fire department were honored after they risked their lives to save dozens of people in a fire last december that claimed four lives. and members of the fitchburg fire department took home top honors for racing to try and save people inside a burning home back in february. governor baker says he's grateful to the firefighters for their bravery. >> they all represent i think in some respects special moments difficult decisions and put themselves in harm's way. and they did so immediately and without hesitation. and in many cases they saved other people's lives as a result. >> sarah: retired state fire marshal shall steven cohen was also recognized her fis service as the longest-serving fire marshal in the state's history. all i have to say is we've been looking at the 2017 boston firefighter's calendar, you guys should check it out. it's all for a good cause. >> nicole: definitely check it out.

>> sarah: today the fire chief in indicton may learn he's out of a job. >> nicole: he's accused of firing women's clothing with taxpayer money. jennifer eagan is live in dighton where the emergency meeting will be held to discuss his future. jen? >> jennifer: nicole, a town selectman says she believes an investigation will reveal thousands of dollars worth of discrepancies. the town's fire chief appeared in court yesterday. investigators say he with the at least four items of women's clothe, altered the receipts to make purchases clothes and submitted the receipts to town for reimburse. under the town clothing allowance. according to court document, a state trooper was interviewing chief anton roderick, roderick reportedly insisted on trying on some of the clothes to show they did indeed fit him. roderick was arraigned on charges including larceny under $250 and making false statements to police. those purchases were made back in september. a town selectman says they'll be doing an audit of the fire department's finance, looking

break. traffic, though, being diverted. police officers are out here on kneeland telling people to go the other direction, you can only imagine how bad this will get has the morning commute continues to go on into the peak hour. you see people trying to make their way through this. big thing for commuters here as they come into this area. but what you're taking a look at is video from the scenes of the water main break itself at washington. that's where all of this we're hearing traffic is being diverted on the other side of us from harrison all the way up to stewart street. but it's right in front of the area of jaw hoe coffee, if you know that area at all. water main break out there. a huge mess to tell you about. so if you're in the area, and a lot of people will be coming out here, obviously at tufts medical center and children's hospital, people coming into work. so this is something to be aware of if you're in the area. try to avoid it if you can.

town. nancy chen, 7news "today in new england." >> kris: time now for fast track traffic with danielle gersh. another situation to watch on the expressway. >> danielle: yeah, on the expressway. it's really busy out there this morning, you guys. the expressway has been backed up all morning long because of an accident we're watching northbound in dorchester. let's go to the maps. the left lane is blocked. this is a pretty serious crash northbound at columbia road. so that has things backed up there. also way south of town on 4895 northbound a a crash, two cars apparently went off into the woods. the pike slow and go from framingham into boston. not seeing any major issues there. we now have a new accident in sawing on route 1 southbound. that's at lynn street there. and then that water main break also in downtown boston and china town, that has washington street closed at kneeland street. that's causings some issues. there take a look at those drive times if you're getting ready to head out the door. half an hour on the expressway northbound.

>> kris: now a story you'll see on just one station. a father appearing in court after allegedly driving drunk twice in the same day. 52-year-old steven byrnes was arrested monday after allegedly picking up his child from school while drunk. later that day, his older son called police to tell him his father was driving drunk once again. this is byrnes' ninth o.u.i. arrest back in court again next week. also this morning, salem state univerty the decision was made after a meeting between students and staff members about the exhibit. the art installation was shut down after some complaints about a painting depicting members of the k.k.k. school officials say they will post warning signs and put up a special curtain over that particular painting. >> the overall outcome offers gains for both those concerns about the exhibit and those concerned about the freedom of expression and builds on what
